All four Shawnee Fire Stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Families and individual guests are always welcome to stop by during daylight hours for an informal visit. The Shawnee Fire Department encourages Shawnee residents to get to know their local firefighters and take the opportunity to see firsthand how a fire station operates and what a fire truck looks like up close.
Community organizations and groups over five should arrange tours by calling at least two weeks in advance. Call (913) 631-1080 during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. At the time of the call, the following information will be required:
- Choice of Date for Tour
- Choice of Time for Tour
- Approximate Age Range of Group
- Approximate Number - Children/Adults
- Contact Name and Number(s)
In addition to fire safety and prevention, tour groups will learn about fire station operations, they will be shown the fire trucks and equipment, and they will see where the firefighters work, eat and sleep.
Tours are planned based on the age and skill level of the group. Education in fire safety and prevention is a key element to all fire station tours. Depending on the age group and the size of the group, tours may last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. As part of the event, birthday party groups may tour the fire station (with the advanced notice requirements fulfilled), but the actual party may not be held at the station.
Our stations are working fire stations and therefore our day to day schedule can be unpredictable. There is always the chance the crew may need to leave during the tour to respond to an emergency call. They also may not be in the station at the designated tour time for the same reason. Should either of these situations occur, it may be necessary to reschedule your tour for another day. To reschedule, call our office at (913) 631-1080 during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
