Swim and Dive Lessons

Shawnee Parks and Recreation offers a unique, small class swim lesson program for children ages one and up. Classes meet Monday through Friday the first week and Monday through Wednesday the second. Eight, 30 minute lessons are $60. Choose from morning or evening programs at the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center. Swim lesson registration opens on March 2, 2026.

Thursday and Friday of second week will be used as make up dates due to weather.

Parent/Child lessons focus on the little fish in your life. Basic skills are taught to children to help them adjust to the aquatic environment so they become comfortable in the water. The learning process is directed through the parents. There will be eight 30 minutes classes. Classes are limited to six parent (guardian)/child couples. (Parent/Child lessons are available 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.; 11:40 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.; 5:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.; and 5:40 p.m. - 6:10 p.m.)

Children will learn basic water skills: water adjustment, water entries, assisted front and black floats, and glides. As children progress they will learn to submerge, front float and back float on their own, and begin introductions to the front crawl stroke.

Shawnee Swim Lessons have a unique style of their own. These are a progressive style lesson based on the concept that each child works at his or her own level; these lessons provide a great learning experience for children. At the end of the first class each child will be placed in the appropriate level and will advance at his or her own pace.

Fundamental dive skills will be taught to participants. Skills include headfirst entry from the side in a sitting position with progression to dives from the diving board. Participants must complete Shawnee Swim Lessons, level 5, before participating in dive lessons. (Dive lessons are only available 11:40 p.m. - 12:10 p.m.)

Students will work at his/her own pace with the benefits of the full attention from an instructor. Classes are a set schedule twice per week. You may choose either M,W or TU,TH for a two week period with a start time of either 12:30pm or 4:20pm. Semi-Private lessons are priced for two individuals.

Learn to swim in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Adult lessons are for those with little or no swimming ability. Participants will work at their own pace with the instructor learning basis strokes and survivor skills. Class size is limited to ensure each participant receives greater interaction with the instructor.
