Garrett

Garrett Park will be closed beginning June 1 for renovations. For more details on the project, visit our Park Progress page.

Garrett Park is named after Samuel Garrett, an English stonemason who settled in Monticello in 1849. He married Betsey Captain, a Shawnee Indian, and was later adopted into the Shawnee tribe. Samuel and his three brothers, also stonemasons, built homes in the area. The Garrett family remained in the region until the 1870s, when they moved to Indian Territory in Oklahoma. However, in 1911, Samuel’s son Frederick returned to Johnson County, reconnecting the Garrett name with the area.
