Before being named Shawnee, the town was originally called Gum Springs. The name came from the practice of lining natural springs with gum tree logs to maintain a clean water supply. Established in 1856, Gum Springs was Johnson County’s first county seat before changing its name to Shawnee in 1922.
Gum Springs Park Features 9.7 acres of parkland including a playground
with swings, four soccer fields (game use only), four baseball/softball
fields ranging from 200'-395', a .6 mile long walking trail and two
medium sized shelters. Gum Springs is popular for birthday parties, baby showers and practices. You can regularly find families enjoying the walking trail with their favorite furry friend.

Gum Springs Park underwent renovations in 2023-2024. Funding from the Parks & Pipes sales tax made this project possible.
